I think you hit on a very important thing there and something we were talking about today and where classical periodization falls short. If something is important enough to train for then one should train for it all the time be it explosion, speed, limit strength, muscular endurance. Once you id them as something you need for your chosen activity that should be trained all the time in some fashion. Sure at points in time weak areas will take priority but if you cant just ignore one aspect in totality and expect to keep the progress you've made and they all do feed into one another in some fashion

Very true, imbalances and limit strength should be addressed first. An athlete is only as strong as the weakest link.
General Strength - foundation technique
limit strength - power lifting
explosive strength - O lifting
in that order...
of course during the limit mesocycle we can start to introduce O lifting technique and during the explosive mesocyle PL is used to maintain limit strength...so all in all I guess I completely agree with you about the blend...they can compliment each other.

True true Shawn and you have to not only look at the sport it self but he individual and what characteristic they lack or is their weakest link. Its very possible for someone to be extremely explosive and technical and lack limit strength or vice verse.

Taste and preferences are one thing, but sport specific results are another story. We have to remember the SAID principle-specific adaptation to imposed demands, and therein lies the answer. So it really depends on what the sport demands are before the question can be accurately answered...imo

My humble opinion? Which would work better for sport? Its like anything else in life, we all have different tastes and preferences so if it were up to me, I would let the athlete choose. Give them a good taste of both and then let him/her decide which is best. If I were a bettin' man, I would say there would be a little of both preferred by most.

What fun would that be?

I was just certified this summer through USA Weightlifting as a Sports Performance Coach (so I am biased)

I can say from personal experience that each styles have their strengths when it comes to sports.
For instance when I was in High School I lifted extensively in O lifting with a club coach and a friend of mine was competing in power events. We both started out on the line (center-me, guard-him) at about the same strength and weight. After 3 years of training he was still best suited for the line and I move to middle linebacker. I don't think that would have happened with out the explosiveness that I picked up from O lifting. Granted he was stronger overall and now outweighed me by 15 pounds, but nobody wanted to line up with either of us in tackling drills. lol So even though he now outweighed me and was stronger in his lifts than I was, I could still hit as hard or harder than him and had become quicker than him.

So It really depends on your goals as to which style best suits a particular sport or position.
