In Ohio, the umpire would probably make her remove it - too dangerous :D
I always used the basic finger signs with sign #1 being the pitch and sign #2 being the location. The way we mix it up is throwing up 4 signs for every pitch. We let our catcher know at the beginning of each inning if we are "12" (using the first two signs), "23" (using the second and third signs), or "34" ( using the last 2 signs). The only time we ever had a problem is on those funky fields where the dugout is a mile from home plate and the catcher can't see the signs. Otherwise, it works great for us.

Does anyone have a good system for relaying signs to the catcher?

I have developed a new website and network for softball recruits. You can check it out at www.fastpitchelite.com.

The latest bit of sour news I had confirmed to me from a few umpires is, since they get paid by the game, they often manipuate the clock by dragging their feet or making calls that will end the game.
A week ago, the last play of one of my games, was a real joke. We were down by 1 run with our tie runner on third. We sent her on a ground ball with 1 out and the catcher set up and blocked the plate without the ball. She then caught the ball at the same time my runner dives towards the plate. Blocking her out, my runner's face drives into the catcher's knee. Laying there bleeding and in pain, the umpire calls her out and both umps immediately exit the field. I tried to argue the call based on the obstruction rule but they didn't even talk to me, the head coach.
I'm pissed about the call but I'm shocked that while my coaches were attending to an injured player bleeding on the field, the umpires punched there time clock.

My point isn't about the call at home, it is about both the reason why they wanted the game over and obviously their attention to a player injured as they scurried away.

By the way... the home ump was the UIC so when I went to find the UIC, was I ever surprised it was him. He didn't want to discuss the play because he was the one that made the call. "In His Judgement" Wow !!! The game of softball is becoming like Washington DC... Out of our control and in the hands of the administrators.

I would pay more tournament fees for a regulation game with seasoned umpiring. But guess what... that tournament is almost impossible to find.

Just My Rant...

I ran alot of tourneys as fund faisers, for our teams. I use 90 min time limit , I have found the younger brackets 10u, 12u get less innings played because of the pitching is just getting developed but each year after that they get better. Now the older divisions get most games in 2-1 , 3-2 scores less walks. Now trophy games are 7 innings. Yes they are fund raisers and yes were running them to make money so the kids can play more and differant places. In Pa states are that way and we go to Nationals every year its same format. I like going to a big tourney with lots of teams, if you win it you know you had to play well, PLUS bottom line is all teams play same time limits so it fair for all.
