Coach,
I like your article and candid comments on coaching at the college level. My experience has been that if you drill down on why someone wants to coach at the college level, sometimes the answer is not sound. Some guys just don't have an accurate picture of what it really looks like (beyond the pay.) An example of that is the "salesman" that many college coaches must be that is part of their job.
I have talked with young prospective college coaches want to mold men and make a difference in…

Since I have coached college football, I have a lot of guys who ask about getting into coaching at the college or pro level. I am not here to burst your bubble--only to be upfront with you. A man can do anything he puts his mind to, but if you are not currently coaching at the college level, then the chances of making it are slim, and pretty much zero for the pros.
I'll tell you what I tell…

At the recent 2009 Coach Survey Summary Results: Evolution of the Athlete Conference, Athlete Assessments conducted a survey of participant coaches. This article contains the results of that survey for your benefit. Hopefully, understanding what your fellow coaches think and feel can help you do an even better job. I have made a few comments along the way in respect of the survey results.
Before we get to this year’s survey, I wanted to include for those of you who did not attend last year’s 20…

Just wanted to give my opinion on the whole issue with the Alabama/LSU game Saturday and what I have heard over and over since then. About that reviewed (non interception) play. The guys foot was clearly on the line and the interception was not made. Replay is great but why do we have to listen to all the people complain when the video evidence is obvious. Even if he had of gotten the interception that would not have won the game the for them. If the guy was clearly in bounds I would have sad wo…

We are picked by 30 at home tomorrow night in a MUST WIN situation. Win and we are in. Last time we were picked by 30 at home this year, we blew a 12 point halftime lead. Homefield Advantage hasn't been as sweet this year.
We are currently 5-4, 3-2 in district...We have lost 3 games by a combined 10 points (6,3,1)...2 District losses by a combined 7 points...Literally 3 plays away from being 8-1 and undefeated district champs!! We have lost 3 2-way starters for the year... OL/DL with a torn ACL…

Two former C.H.A.M.P.S. Athletes were on this team; one of whom was my son who rocked a double in the 8th inning ultimately scoring the winning run and the other was the closer who sealed up the victory by shutting down the opponents.
C.H.A.M.P.S. Press Release – The Atlanta Astros, Norcross, GA. Coached by Mr. Marty Kelly, won the 2009 MSBL World Series by defeating a team from California, in a 9 inning nail biter. The Astros took an early 1 to nothing lead only to have the game tied up by a h…

Note: This is a re-posting of my latest blog post on 1MileNation.com, in response to seeing an article on how some marathons are looking at cut-off times in races, to help reduce time constraints and public safety needs for those races.
Greetings,
I know I already posted a blog today, but I got the buzz to post another one, more or less a good old fashioned "Rickshaw Rant on Running".
Via Facebook news feeds today from my favorite trainer from Baton Rouge, Sarah Rippel (…

As a sports parent or coach it's your job to understand anger management. Anger erupts too often on the field and can carry over into aggressiveness at school and at home.
This comes direct from Joe Bouffard, Director of the Youth Football Coaches Association, a group that educates coaches about how to handle anger in youth sports.
First of all, coaches need to understand why kids get angry, he says, That means asking their athletes the right questions. Parents can help with this process by in…
